Small Half Bathroom Ideas — My Coastal Chic Half Bath Remodel

This natural bathroom is a spa inspired bathroom. My powder room inspiration comes from nature with a relaxing vibe with a chic spa like feel. Although I think of it as a modern coastal bathroom, it could also work for a boho or a farmhouse style half bath. And if you expanded the tile and vanity, you could do a similar spa like bathroom for a primary bath or a spa inspired guest bath.

We bought a townhome that was built in the 1980’s and this bathroom was original. We’re by the beach so I wanted an organic coastal chic vibe to go with the rest of my remodeled beach chic home. This was the original bathroom with just the medicine cabinet removed.

Budget

The budget for my half bath remodel was $2000, so not a lot. I wanted a lot of bang for my buck. I like one statement item, which for this coastal style bathroom was the stone wall. The vanity was about 31″ tall with the countertop so the shorter old style. The cost to have someone demo the vanity, buy a new one, and pay someone to install it would have blown my budget. So, I decided to reface the current vanity and add a new countertop with a vessel sink. When you have a vessel sink, you want a vanity at this about this height. With my thick wood countertop, I also added about an inch in height.

I removed the vanity doors and cleaned, primed and painted the front of the cabinet frame in white. Then, I ordered white shaker doors and a slab faux drawer front from Home Depot. And picked up simple bar cabinet knobs from Lowes.

For the countertop I wanted live edge real wood. Since it’s a guest powder room, there isn’t a lot of moisture, so wood is fine as long as it has a polyurethane or varnish coating. I ended up finding a wood coffee table on Amazon that was just a tad larger than I needed but was already finished, so this was a cost effective countertop. The legs are separate so the flat wood was perfect, just needed to be cut down a bit. I kept the cut pieces and used the longest one as a narrow floating shelf in the bathroom.

The stone wall was made with 12′ x 12″ mesh tile. My handyman who built the wall for me, cut a board the size of the wall with the cut out for the light fixture and laid it down to set the stones. I found pebble stones that are close enough together that we didn’t have to grout. Then, 3 people had to lift the heavy stone board to put it in place. Then, he connected the vessel sink and faucet, and put up my round mirror and a new light fixture.

I added a few accessories, a new towel ring, and a toilet paper holder. Now it looks and feels like a luxury spa like bathroom.

I’m very happy with the outcome. It’s my favorite room in our home! This half bath remodel gets lots of compliments from guests.
