A Small Bathroom Refresh That Feels Like a Full Transformation

This small bathroom remodel is proof that you don’t need a full renovation to completely transform your space. We just did a refresh of the room for about $1200. With a few strategic updates, this once-dated bathroom now feels fresh and effortlessly coastal.

The foundation of the design started with soft peach (pale coral) walls, which immediately warmed the space while still keeping it light, airy, and reflective—exactly what you want in a smaller bathroom.

The Vanity Upgrade That Changed Everything

Instead of replacing the vanity (which can quickly increase both cost and scope), we chose to work with what was already there—and elevate it.

This is one of the most effective ways to stay on budget in a bathroom remodel.

Removing a vanity often means adjusting flooring, patching tile, or even reworking plumbing. By keeping the existing footprint, we avoided all of that.

However, the original vanity had two elements that made it feel dated:

  • A shorter, outdated height
  • Visible gaps between cabinet doors and drawer fronts – a dated look

Today’s vanities are taller and more streamlined, so that’s exactly where we focused.

How to Raise a Bathroom Vanity

We raised the vanity by almost 4 inches to create a more comfortable, modern height. To raise a vanity, some add a taller toe kick. We chose to remove the countertop and add a 1 x 4 wood extension, and painted it white to seamlessly match the vanity.

The result feels intentional—not like an add-on.

We then replaced the cabinet doors and drawer fronts with frameless styles, creating a clean, tailored look with minimal spacing. You can custom order doors from Home Depot or from a cabinet company.

Updated hardware completed the transformation, instantly giving the vanity a high-end, custom feel. I like to choose cabinet hardware that is a little unique to give it a designer look. For the cabinet doors, we went with very long handles for a unique designer look at a reasonable price – got them on Amazon.

Update the Bathroom Mirror

One of the simplest but most impactful updates in this space was swapping the original square frameless mirror for a framed round mirror. The circular shape immediately softens all the straight lines from the vanity and tile, creating a more balanced, designer look. Adding a gold frame also ties into the mixed metal elements used throughout the bathroom, helping everything feel cohesive and intentional.

It’s a small change, but it draws the eye and elevates the entire space—proving that even a single design decision can shift the feel of a room.

Mixing Metals the Right Way

Originally, the bathroom hardware was entirely silver. Instead of replacing every fixture, we introduced warm gold tones to create contrast and depth—without unnecessary expense.

The key to mixing metals successfully is repetition and connection.

We used:

  • Mixed metal cabinet hardware (silver + gold) to bridge the finishes
  • A gold-framed mirror as a focal point
  • Gold shower curtain hooks to carry the tone throughout the space

This approach makes the mix feel intentional, not accidental—and adds a layered, designer look.

Smart Storage Without Bulk

To increase storage without overwhelming the room, we added a corner cabinet.

This is a simple but often overlooked solution for small bathrooms. A corner piece visually softens the space, feels lighter than a traditional cabinet, and makes use of an area that typically goes unused.

The Finishing Touches: Coastal, Soft, and Collected

The final layer is what brings the entire space together.

A tropical plant gives a coastal feel and movement, while subtle coastal decor—like mermaid-inspired wall art—keeps the design personal without feeling overly themed.

The overall effect is calm and elevated coastal style.

The Takeaway

If you’re planning a small bathroom remodel, focus on high-impact updates rather than a full gut renovation.

  • Work with your existing layout
  • Upgrade your vanity instead of replacing it
  • Raise heights for a more modern feel
  • Mix metals intentionally
  • Add storage in unexpected ways
  • Accessories finish a space and help define a style

These are the kinds of design decisions that create a space that not only looks beautiful—but feels thoughtfully designed.

What is a good budget for a small bathroom remodel?

A good budget for a small bathroom remodel typically falls between $5,000 and $15,000, depending on the level of updates. On the other hand, a refresh just focused on cosmetic upgrades such as paint, hardware, lighting, and vanity improvements—can done for less. Depending on what improvements you make, a refresh could be in the $1000 to $2500 range or less. Once you start moving plumbing, replacing tile, or installing a brand-new vanity, costs increase quickly. The key is deciding where you’ll see the most visual impact and investing there.

Can you remodel a small bathroom for $5,000?

Yes, but it requires a strategic, design-first approach. Instead of a full renovation, focus on a refresh as much as possible: keep your existing layout, consider updating the vanity rather than replacing it, paint the walls, swap out hardware, and upgrade your mirror and lighting. This project is a great example of how thoughtful updates can completely transform a space without a high-end budget.

What is a coastal bathroom?

A coastal bathroom is designed to feel light, relaxed, and inspired by the beach. It typically features soft, airy colors (like whites, sand tones, soft blues, or pale coral), natural textures, and subtle ocean-inspired elements. The goal isn’t to create a themed space, but rather a calm, breezy environment that feels collected and effortless—like a coastal retreat.

How to make your bathroom look beachy?

To create a beachy bathroom, focus on a few layered elements:

  • Start with a light, fresh color palette (soft blues, whites, sandy neutrals, or pale coral)
  • Incorporate natural textures like wood, rattan, or woven accents
  • Use simple coastal-inspired decor (art, shells, or subtle ocean motifs)
  • Keep styling minimal and airy

In this space, the pale coral walls, tropical greenery, and soft coastal accents create that beachy feel without overwhelming the design.

Is coastal design still in style?

Yes—coastal design is very much still in style, but it has evolved. Today’s coastal look is more refined and less themed. It leans into clean lines, layered neutrals, and subtle nods to the ocean rather than obvious beach decor. Think “coastal chic” instead of “nautical.” This updated approach keeps the style feeling timeless, fresh, and elevated.
